My Story.
My path into interpretation has taken me through some of the country’s most significant cultural institutions and most fascinating projects. My past work includes interpretive projects nationwide—from waysides you’ll find on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to an interpretive plan for the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail on Hawai’i Island.
I’ve always walked the line between collections and exhibitions. I understand the impulse to protect objects in carefully controlled storage rooms where nothing can harm them. But I also believe our society is stronger when we shine a (figurative, low-lumen) light on those same objects. I believe in the power of finding connection to the tangible pieces of our shared history.
In addition to my interpretation and exhibit work, I bring deep experience in collections and volunteer management. I’ve written collections policies, developed deaccession programs, and built volunteer corps from the ground up. For me, these efforts are not just about preservation—they’re about creating systems that empower staff, engage communities, and keep collections meaningful and accessible.
I’ve worked at a range of museums in Washington, D.C. and Minnesota, including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Ford’s Theatre, Hennepin History Museum, and Scott County Historical Society. Along the way, I earned a Master’s in Museum Studies from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College, grounding my practice in both academic training and hands-on experience.
When I’m not seeking out stories of place or scheming ways to get people closer to the objects, you’ll usually find me surrounded by animals. I live on a small farm outside of Northfield, Minnesota, with two dogs, four cats, six goats, nine chickens, and one very patient husband. Caring for my menagerie keeps me grounded in the same values I bring to my work: stewardship, curiosity, and respect.
